Free Invention Patent Search Tool

There are many invention patent search tools available on the web. I have used Google Patent Search, Freepatentsonline and the search site at the USPTO. They all are helpful and give you access to free patent information. Something always seemed missing though.

The search tool that I now recommend is called Boliven Search. This site does what all the others do. You can search the entire patent databases of the world or narrow your search to one region such as the US or Japan. One feature that this tool has the others lack is the ability to save patents to lists and add comments.

This is extremely helpful and allows you to do an entire patent search without printing out dozens of patents. The print method is the one I used in the past until I found this tool. This search site also allows you to make comments on any patent that you save to a list. This gives you the ability to rank your patents in your search or summarize the invention as it relates to your search. I have not found this type of tool anywhere else on the web.

When you are searching patents the usual goal is to evaluate what has already been patented and determine if your invention idea can rightfully receive a patent. Always gather enough information to be able to make an informed decision but remember the patent office has the final word on what is and is not patentable.

Good luck. I hope you find this patent searching tool as helpful as I did.

How To Use This Invention Patent Search Tool
  1. Enter a word or phrase etc. that closely describes your invention into the Boliven search box.
  2. Review the document titles and descriptions of the search results page that opens in a separate window.
  3. Click on what you think are the most relevant patents.
  4. Read the "Summary Of The Invention" or "Abstract" sections first to sort out the most relevant patents to review.
  5. Click the "Add to my list" icon to save the most relevant patents for later review. Enter comments about the patent if you like.
